Acne Scarring
Acne scars represent disrupted collagen architecture — and the right treatment depends entirely on what kind of disruption is present. Shallow textural irregularities respond differently than deep icepick or boxcar scars, and Dr. Martin evaluates scar type and depth before recommending anything.
For mild to moderate scarring, the Sciton Halo Tribrid addresses both surface texture and deeper dermal remodeling in a single session, with three to five days of downtime. For more significant scarring — particularly pitted or rolling patterns — the ECO2 fractional CO2 laser delivers deeper ablative resurfacing that drives more substantial collagen reorganization, with five to seven days of recovery and results that are meaningful and durable. Genius RF Microneedling is effective for atrophic scarring specifically because its radiofrequency energy rebuilds collagen beneath the surface without disrupting the epidermis — one to two days of mild redness, and it can be used alone or layered with laser work to extend results. For patients with both active acne and scarring, Dr. Martin sequences treatment: control the active disease first, then address what it left behind.
Why do some acne scars respond to treatment better than others?
Acne scars aren't one thing — they're a spectrum, and the underlying collagen disruption looks very different depending on the type. Shallow textural scars and rolling scars respond well to most resurfacing approaches. Deeper icepick or boxcar scars involve more significant collagen loss and often require more aggressive intervention. At our practice, we evaluate scar type and depth carefully before recommending anything, because selecting the wrong treatment for the wrong scar type is one of the most common reasons patients are disappointed with their results elsewhere.
What's the difference between the laser options for acne scars?
It largely comes down to how deep we need to go and how much downtime is acceptable. The Sciton Halo Tribrid is a strong middle-ground option — it addresses both surface texture and deeper dermal remodeling in a single session with three to five days of downtime. The ECO2 fractional CO2 laser is our most intensive option, reserved for significant scarring that requires deeper ablative resurfacing — recovery is five to seven days, but the collagen rebuilding that follows is substantial. Genius RF Microneedling is an excellent option for atrophic scarring in patients who want real improvement with just one to two days of mild redness. At our practice, many patients use a combination of these over a treatment plan rather than relying on one modality.
How many treatments does it take to see meaningful improvement in acne scars?
Acne scarring is one of those concerns where honesty matters a lot, because it's not a one-session fix for most patients. Mild to moderate scarring can see meaningful improvement over two to three sessions with the right technology. Significant scarring — especially deep pitting — typically requires a longer commitment and realistic expectations about the degree of improvement possible. At our practice, we discuss this openly at consultation so patients understand what a realistic outcome looks like before they begin. Progress photos and session-by-session assessments help keep the plan on track.
Is there anything I should do between sessions to support better results?
Yes — and the work you do between sessions genuinely influences outcomes. Consistent sun protection is non-negotiable, because UV exposure after resurfacing treatments can trigger post-inflammatory pigmentation that complicates results. A supportive skincare routine — typically including a medical-grade retinol and antioxidant — helps maintain the collagen-stimulating effect between sessions. At our practice, we discuss aftercare and at-home maintenance as part of every treatment plan, not as an afterthought. How you care for your skin between visits is part of the result.
