Chin Definition
A recessed or poorly defined chin affects the entire lower face — altering the apparent balance of the jaw, the perceived projection of the nose, and the definition of the neck transition. Dermal filler placed along the chin adds projection, refines vertical height, and improves the chin's shape relative to the rest of the face without surgery.
What distinguishes Dr. Martin's approach is how he evaluates the chin before treating it. Dental occlusion, jaw alignment, and bite mechanics all factor into his assessment — because a chin that appears recessed due to a structural or orthodontic cause is a different clinical situation than one that is simply underprojected in an otherwise balanced face. Treating those two presentations the same way produces different results. Filler placed in the chin is long-lasting — typically twelve to eighteen months — because the area sees very little movement. Results are predictable when guided by anatomical planning that accounts for the full structural picture.
How does chin projection affect overall facial appearance?
The chin is the anchor of the lower face, and its position significantly influences how the jawline, neck, and even the nose appear in profile. A well-projected chin creates a balanced lower facial triangle and defines the transition between the face and neck. A recessed chin, by contrast, can make the nose appear larger by comparison, the jawline appear softer, and the neck less defined — even when none of those features have an intrinsic problem. At our practice, we evaluate the chin in the context of the full face — including the dental relationship and jaw alignment — because structural balance is the foundation of a natural-looking result.
How is chin augmentation with filler different from a surgical implant?
Filler augmentation is non-surgical, reversible, and requires virtually no downtime — you can return to normal activity the same day. It's also adjustable, which means we can refine the result over subsequent appointments if needed. A surgical implant provides a permanent solution with more significant projection potential, but involves a recovery period and carries surgical risks. At our practice, filler is a genuinely effective option for patients with mild to moderate chin recession — not just a stopgap before surgery. For patients with significant structural recession or malocclusion, we may discuss orthodontic, orthognathic, or surgical options alongside filler as part of a complete evaluation.
Will chin filler change how my bite feels or affects my teeth?
No — chin filler is placed in the soft tissue anterior to the chin bone and does not interact with bite mechanics, occlusion, or dental function in any way. That said, the reason Dr. Martin evaluates dental and jaw alignment before recommending chin filler is not because filler can affect the bite, but because bite and jaw position can affect how a chin looks — and treating a chin that appears recessed due to a dental malocclusion with filler alone may not produce the most aesthetically coherent result. At our practice, that structural evaluation is part of what makes chin assessment more thorough than it would be in a purely aesthetic setting.
How long does chin filler last?
Chin filler is one of the longer-lasting filler placements because the area sees very little movement relative to places like the lips or nasolabial folds. Most patients find results last twelve to eighteen months or longer depending on the product used. At our practice, we select a product with appropriate structure and longevity for chin augmentation — softer, more pliable fillers are better suited to mobile areas, while the chin benefits from a product with enough structure to maintain projection over time.
