Hair Loss & Thinning

Hair thinning is rarely one thing. Androgenetic alopecia — the genetic form affecting both men and women — involves gradual follicular miniaturization over time. Telogen effluvium is a different pattern: diffuse shedding triggered by stress, illness, or hormonal shifts, which can resolve on its own but responds well to early intervention. Dr. Martin evaluates the pattern and likely cause before recommending treatment, because the approach differs depending on what's driving the loss.

The Keralase MD system combines low-level laser therapy delivered through the LaseMD platform with a topical growth factor solution applied immediately after. The laser creates microchannels in the scalp that dramatically increase how deeply the growth factors absorb — making this significantly more effective than topical application alone. Sessions are 30 to 45 minutes with no downtime. A course of treatments spaced two to four weeks apart is the standard starting point, with maintenance sessions thereafter to sustain density improvements. This works best for patients in the early to moderate stages of thinning who still have viable follicles. When the loss is advanced or the pattern suggests scarring alopecia, Dr. Martin is direct about what non-surgical treatment can and can't accomplish.

What's causing my hair to thin?

Hair thinning has several possible causes, and identifying the right one matters for treatment. Androgenetic alopecia — the genetic form of hair loss that runs in families — is the most common cause in both men and women, and it involves a gradual miniaturization of the hair follicle over time. Telogen effluvium is a different presentation — a diffuse shedding triggered by stress, illness, nutritional deficiency, or hormonal shifts — that often resolves on its own but can benefit from intervention. At our practice, we assess the pattern and likely cause of your thinning before recommending a treatment plan, because what works for androgenetic alopecia may not be the right approach for effluvium-driven shedding.

How does the Keralase MD treatment work?

The Keralase MD system combines two components that work synergistically. The LaseMD laser creates microchannels in the scalp — tiny, precisely controlled openings that dramatically increase the absorption of topical agents applied immediately after treatment. Those agents are a specialized growth factor solution designed to support follicular health and stimulate the hair growth cycle. The growth factors get absorbed at a fraction of the depth they'd need to penetrate on their own, which is what makes this approach significantly more effective than topical application alone. At our practice, we find this combination particularly effective for patients in the early to moderate stages of thinning who still have viable follicles to work with.

How long before I see results from hair restoration treatment?

Hair growth is a slow biological process, so realistic expectations matter here. Most patients begin noticing reduced shedding and early density improvements at three to four months into a treatment course. More visible thickening and coverage typically becomes apparent at six months and beyond. At our practice, we photograph the scalp at baseline and at regular intervals so you have an objective reference for your progress — because hair growth can be easy to miss without side-by-side comparison. A course of treatments spaced two to four weeks apart is standard before transitioning to maintenance.

Am I a good candidate for non-surgical hair restoration?

The best candidates are patients in the early to moderate stages of hair thinning who still have follicles present and active — even if those follicles are miniaturized and producing thinner hairs. Advanced hair loss with significant visible scalp and long-standing follicular absence is less likely to respond to non-surgical approaches, and we'll tell you honestly at consultation if we think a referral to a hair transplant specialist would serve you better. At our practice, we'd rather point you in the right direction than commit you to a treatment that isn't likely to deliver meaningful results for your specific presentation.
