Jawline Contouring
A defined jawline comes from a sharp, visible mandibular border — the edge between the face and the neck. When that border softens through volume depletion, ligament loosening, or jowling, the lower face loses its structure and appears heavier than it is. Dr. Martin places filler directly along the mandibular border to restore definition, sharpen the jaw angle, and improve the face-to-neck transition.
This is a structural treatment. Filler is positioned close to the bone to create a crisp contour rather than added as soft tissue volume, and dosing is calibrated to the patient's existing anatomy and what it will support. The jaw is evaluated alongside chin projection, lower face width, and occlusal alignment before anything is placed — because a defined jawline only looks natural when it's proportionate to everything surrounding it. Patients with meaningful bone-level asymmetry, dental malocclusion, or TMJ involvement are assessed with particular care. Results typically last twelve to twenty-four months, with the mandibular border being one of the longer-lasting filler placements due to its low-movement position.
What makes a jawline look defined versus soft?
Definition along the jawline comes from the sharpness of the angle between the face and neck — influenced by bone prominence, soft tissue volume along the mandibular border, and the absence of excess tissue below the jaw. With age, volume depletes along the mandible, ligaments loosen, and jowling develops — all of which soften the jawline contour. At our practice, we assess jawline definition in relation to the chin position, lower face width, and the neck, because a defined jawline only looks natural when it's consistent with the surrounding anatomy.
How does filler create jawline definition?
Filler placed along the mandibular border adds structural volume directly on the bone, sharpening the contour of the jaw and improving the definition of the jaw angle. This creates a more distinct transition between the face and neck and can also improve the appearance of mild jowling by reinforcing the border that jowl tissue blurs. At our practice, we place filler as a structural intervention — targeting the bone-level scaffold of the jaw rather than adding soft tissue volume, which produces a more precise and longer-lasting result.
How is jawline contouring affected by TMJ or dental issues?
Significantly — and this is where Dr. Martin's background makes a real difference. Jaw asymmetry, malocclusion, masseter hypertrophy, and TMJ-related bone changes all influence how the jawline looks and how filler should be placed. A patient with significant masseter hypertrophy may benefit more from masseter neurotoxin before or alongside jawline filler, to allow the bone structure to emerge as the muscle reduces. A patient with occlusal asymmetry may have structural asymmetry that should be disclosed and discussed before a treatment plan is finalized. At our practice, these conversations happen before any product is placed.
How long do jawline filler results last?
Because filler placed along the jaw is positioned on bone in a relatively low-movement area, it tends to be among the more durable placements — most patients see results lasting twelve to twenty-four months depending on the product. Maintenance is typically more straightforward than in areas like the lips, where frequent touch-ups are common. At our practice, we photograph the jaw at each visit and build a maintenance schedule based on your individual response, so retreatment is timed appropriately rather than guessed at.
