Rosacea & Redness
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition — persistent redness, vascular reactivity, flushing, and in some presentations active papulopustular breakouts. It doesn't go away with a single treatment. Dr. Martin's approach is focused on reducing visible redness, calming reactive skin, and addressing the vascular component that drives the underlying pattern, with the understanding that maintenance is part of the long-term plan.
The Clarity II dual-wavelength laser selectively targets oxyhemoglobin in superficial vessels using its 755nm alexandrite and 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelengths — sessions run 20 to 40 minutes with 24 to 48 hours of mild redness afterward. The Spectra MDF and Hollywood Spectra platforms improve diffuse redness and overall reactivity through toning protocols with no downtime at all. For patients with sensitive, rosacea-prone skin, the Lase MD Ultra's gentle non-ablative delivery improves surface texture and irregularity without provoking the inflammatory response that more aggressive treatments risk. Dr. Martin sequences treatment starting with the most conservative effective option and adjusts based on how the skin responds.
What exactly is rosacea, and why does it cause redness?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the vascular system of the face — causing blood vessels near the skin's surface to dilate more easily and more persistently than they should. That's what produces the characteristic redness, flushing, and in more advanced presentations, visible broken capillaries. The exact cause isn't fully understood, but it tends to be triggered by heat, alcohol, spicy food, UV exposure, and stress. At our practice, we assess rosacea type and severity carefully before recommending treatment, because the approach for diffuse redness looks different from the approach for active vascular lesions.
Can rosacea be cured with laser treatment?
Not cured — but very effectively managed. Laser treatment can significantly reduce visible redness, calm vascular reactivity, and clear broken capillaries, giving patients a dramatic improvement in their baseline appearance. What it can't do is change the underlying predisposition to flushing and redness, which is why maintenance is an important part of any rosacea treatment plan. At our practice, we're upfront about this distinction because patients who understand rosacea as something to manage — rather than eliminate — tend to have much better long-term outcomes. We build a plan that gets you to a better baseline and keeps you there.
Which treatments do you use for rosacea at your practice?
The Clarity II dual-wavelength laser is our primary tool for addressing the vascular component of rosacea — its 755nm and 1064nm wavelengths selectively target the blood vessels responsible for redness without disrupting the surrounding skin. For patients with diffuse redness and sensitivity, we also use the Spectra MDF and Lase MD Ultra, both of which improve reactivity and tone with no downtime — which matters a lot for rosacea patients whose skin can be easily provoked. At our practice, we always start with the most conservative effective approach and progress based on how your skin responds.
Are there things I should avoid that make rosacea worse?
Several — and knowing your personal triggers is genuinely one of the most effective things you can do to manage rosacea. Heat is one of the most common culprits: hot beverages, saunas, hot yoga, very hot showers, and sun exposure all dilate blood vessels and can trigger or worsen flares. Alcohol and spicy foods are also frequent triggers. From a skincare standpoint, harsh exfoliants, fragrances, and certain active ingredients can provoke reactive skin. At our practice, we spend time discussing lifestyle and skincare adjustments alongside treatment, because managing triggers is just as important as the in-office work.
