Sun Damage

Sun damage accumulates quietly. The immediate burn fades, but the underlying disruption to collagen, melanin distribution, and surface texture compounds over years — showing up eventually as uneven pigmentation, rough texture, dilated vessels, and a general loss of clarity that develops too gradually to pinpoint a cause. Dr. Martin treats photodamage as a layered problem and matches technology to the depth of what's present.

The Sciton Halo Tribrid is the most comprehensive single-session option — combining a non-ablative wavelength for deeper pigment and tone with an ablative wavelength for surface resurfacing, delivered together in 30 to 60 minutes with three to five days of downtime. For milder damage or patients who need zero recovery time, the Lase MD Ultra resurfacing gentle superficial discoloration in sessions under 30 minutes. The Spectra MDF and Hollywood Spectra platforms address isolated pigmented lesions and uneven tone through Q-switched energy that selectively disrupts melanin — brief sessions, no recovery. For more complex presentations involving both texture and pigment, Dr. Martin often sequences treatments, starting with a Halo session and maintaining the result over time with Lase MD Ultra or Spectra.

What does sun damage actually look like on the skin?

Sun damage is more varied than most people expect — it's not just dark spots. It shows up as uneven pigmentation, rough texture, a loss of translucency and clarity, broken capillaries, and early wrinkling in areas with the highest cumulative exposure. Some of it is visible to the naked eye; some of it only becomes apparent under UV imaging, which shows just how much damage is lurking beneath the surface before it becomes visible. At our practice, we assess sun damage comprehensively rather than treating only what you can already see — because getting ahead of it is always easier than correcting it later.

Which treatment is best for sun damage?

The Sciton Halo Tribrid is genuinely one of the most effective single treatments available for sun-damaged skin — it was designed specifically to address the layered nature of photodamage by combining ablative and non-ablative wavelengths in a single pass. For patients with milder damage or those who prefer a zero-downtime approach, the Lase MD Ultra and Spectra platforms also produce meaningful improvement over a series of sessions. At our practice, the right answer depends on the degree of damage, your skin type, and how much recovery time you're willing to work with — which is exactly what we discuss at your consultation.

I've had sun damage for years. Is it too late to treat it?

It's genuinely never too late to make meaningful improvements, and patients are often surprised by how much progress is achievable even with longstanding photodamage. That said, decades of accumulated sun exposure typically require a more comprehensive treatment plan than recent damage — one session is unlikely to undo years of UV exposure, and we'll set realistic expectations about what a multi-session approach can achieve. At our practice, we take a long-term view rather than promising dramatic single-session results. Consistent, well-planned treatment delivers the most lasting improvement.

Will the sun damage come back after treatment?

Treated damage won't come back — but new damage certainly can if sun protection isn't part of your daily routine going forward. This is one of the most important conversations we have with patients after photodamage treatment. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, worn daily, is non-negotiable for maintaining results. At our practice, we also build maintenance treatments into the long-term plan — periodic Lase MD Ultra or Spectra sessions help preserve the improvements and stay ahead of new damage before it becomes established.
