Tattoo Removal

Tattoo removal works by shattering the ink particles embedded in the dermis into fragments small enough for the body's immune system to clear over time. Dr. Martin uses the Spectra MDF Q-switched Nd:YAG laser for this — a platform that delivers nanosecond pulses of energy with the precision needed to break down pigment without damaging surrounding tissue.

The number of sessions varies considerably depending on the tattoo's age, ink colors, saturation, and depth, as well as the patient's skin type and how efficiently the immune system clears the fragmented ink. Older, less saturated tattoos clear faster than newer, heavily pigmented work. Black and dark blue inks respond best. Lighter colors — green, yellow, white — are more resistant and may only partially fade regardless of how many sessions are completed. Sessions run 15 to 30 minutes and are spaced six to eight weeks apart to allow adequate clearance time. Some blistering and redness in the days following treatment is expected. Dr. Martin sets honest expectations at consultation about timeline and the realistic range of outcomes for each specific tattoo.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

The Spectra MDF laser delivers nanosecond pulses of high-intensity energy directly into the tattoo ink, shattering the pigment particles into fragments small enough for the body's immune system to recognize and clear away through the lymphatic system. Each session reduces the concentration of ink, causing the tattoo to fade gradually over time. At our practice, we use the Q-switched Nd:YAG technology in the Spectra MDF specifically because of its precision and its effectiveness across a range of common ink colors — though some colors, particularly lighter shades like green and blue, are more resistant and may require additional sessions.

How many sessions will it take to remove my tattoo?

Honestly, it varies more than people expect — and we'd rather be upfront about that than give you a number that turns out to be wrong. Most tattoos require somewhere between six and twelve sessions, but the actual number depends on the tattoo's age, size, ink density, colors used, and how deeply the ink was placed. Older tattoos with less saturated ink typically respond faster than newer, heavily saturated work. At our practice, we assess all of these factors at consultation and give you a realistic range rather than a single number — and we evaluate progress after each session to keep the plan current.

Does tattoo removal hurt, and what does recovery look like?

Most patients describe the sensation as similar to the snap of a rubber band — brief and intense at each pulse. The discomfort is very tolerable for small tattoos, and for larger or more sensitive areas we can discuss topical numbing options. Afterward, the treated area typically becomes red and swollen, and some mild blistering is normal and expected — it's a sign that the laser energy has done its job. Recovery usually runs two to five days, during which the area should be kept clean, protected from the sun, and treated gently. At our practice, we go through detailed aftercare instructions before your first session so you know exactly what to expect.

Will the tattoo completely disappear?

For many patients and many tattoos, yes — complete clearance is achievable. That said, certain ink colors and certain skin types make complete removal more difficult. Black and dark blue inks respond best. Lighter colors — particularly light green, yellow, and white — are more resistant to Q-switched laser energy and may fade only partially regardless of how many sessions are completed. At our practice, we assess your tattoo's colors, age, and placement at consultation and give you an honest picture of what complete versus partial clearance looks like for your specific tattoo — so expectations are realistic from the start.
